What to Order at Chipotle: High-Protein Bowls Under 600 Calories

What to Order at Chipotle: High-Protein Bowls Under 600 Calories
Advertisement

A healthy Chipotle order starts with a bowl or salad instead of a burrito, one or two scoops of chicken or steak, beans, fajita veggies and salsa. Built that way, every bowl below lands under 600 calories with 21 to 73 g of protein, and most of them have 35 g or more. Skip the tortilla, chips and creamy extras and you’ll save hundreds of calories without losing the parts that make the bowl worth ordering.

All numbers come from Chipotle’s published U.S. nutrition facts, added up ingredient by ingredient. Portions vary from order to order and menus change, so check the Chipotle app for the build at your restaurant.

The best chicken orders

Chicken is the best protein value on the menu: a standard 4 oz scoop has 180 calories and 32 g of protein, more protein than any other option for close to the same calories.

1. Double chicken bowl, no rice

Per bowl: 525 calories, 73 g protein, 1,240 mg sodium.

Two scoops of chicken, black beans, fajita veggies and tomatillo-green chili salsa. Dropping the rice pays for the second scoop of chicken, so you get more than double the protein of a typical bowl for about the same calories. The numbers here count the double as two standard 4 oz servings, since Chipotle doesn’t list a separate figure for a double scoop.

2. Chicken salad with cheese

Per salad: 480 calories, 48 g protein, 1,425 mg sodium.

Supergreens lettuce mix, chicken, black beans, fajita veggies, fresh tomato salsa and cheese. Use the salsa as your dressing: the chipotle-honey vinaigrette adds 220 calories, 12 g sugar and 850 mg sodium. If you want it on the side, a light drizzle goes a long way.

3. Classic chicken bowl

Per bowl: 565 calories, 45 g protein, 1,410 mg sodium.

Chicken, brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies and fresh tomato salsa. It’s my pick for a meal that still feels like a full burrito bowl. Brown and white rice are both 210 calories, but brown rice has 190 mg sodium versus 350 mg. Swap the tomato salsa for tomatillo-green chili salsa and the bowl drops to 555 calories and 1,120 mg sodium.

4. Three crispy chicken tacos

Per order: 435 calories, 36 g protein, 1,010 mg sodium.

You’ll also loveBalsamic Brussels Sprouts: Crispy Edges, Sticky Honey Glaze

Three crispy corn tortillas with chicken, fajita veggies and fresh tomato salsa. The corn shells are 70 calories each with no sodium listed, which makes this the lowest-sodium order on the list. Soft flour taco tortillas are 80 calories and 160 mg sodium each, so the crispy shells are the better choice.

Beef, pork and plant-based bowls

5. Barbacoa bowl

Per bowl: 545 calories, 37 g protein, 1,340 mg sodium.

Barbacoa, brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies and tomatillo-green chili salsa. Barbacoa brings 24 g protein per scoop, but it’s also the saltiest meat at 530 mg, so the green salsa (260 mg) is a smarter match here than fresh tomato salsa (550 mg).

6. Carnitas bowl

Per bowl: 595 calories, 36 g protein, 1,550 mg sodium.

Carnitas, brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies and fresh tomato salsa. Carnitas is the richest protein at 210 calories and 12 g fat per scoop, so this bowl only just fits under 600. Skip cheese and sour cream here, or switch to green salsa to trim sodium.

7. Steak bowl

Per bowl: 535 calories, 34 g protein, 1,430 mg sodium.

Steak, brown rice, pinto beans, fajita veggies and fresh tomato salsa. Steak is the lowest-calorie meat at 150 calories per scoop, with 21 g protein. Pinto and black beans are identical on calories and protein (130 calories, 8 g), so pick whichever you like.

8. Sofritas bowl

Per bowl: 525 calories, 21 g protein, 1,370 mg sodium.

Sofritas, brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies and tomatillo-green chili salsa. The braised tofu has 8 g protein per scoop, so the beans do a lot of the work. For more protein, ask for both black and pinto beans and skip the rice: that version comes to 445 calories and 25 g protein, with extra fiber. If you cook plant-based at home, our vegetarian meal prep bowls follow the same beans-plus-veggies formula.

High-protein Chipotle combos

  • Double chicken salad (Supergreens, two scoops of chicken, fajita veggies, fresh tomato salsa): 420 calories, 66 g protein, 1,335 mg sodium.
  • Steak and chicken bowl, no rice (steak, chicken, black beans, fajita veggies, green chili salsa): 495 calories, 62 g protein, 1,260 mg sodium.
  • Chipotle’s High Protein-High Fiber Bowl (chicken, light brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies, roasted chili-corn salsa, fresh tomato salsa, romaine): Chipotle lists it at 540 calories, 46 g protein and 14 g fiber.
  • A side cup of chicken as a snack or add-on: 180 calories and 32 g protein for a 4 oz portion.

Combo numbers don’t include chips or drinks. If you’d rather make bowls like these at home for the week, our chicken and rice meal prep gets four lunches done in an hour, and our guide to healthy Taco Bell options covers the other big Tex-Mex chain.

The add-ons that change the numbers most

A few items can push a healthy bowl past 900 calories quickly. The burrito tortilla adds 320 calories and 600 mg sodium on its own. A regular bag of chips is 540 calories. Guacamole adds 230 calories (mostly from healthy fats, so it can be worth it if you skip cheese and sour cream), sour cream and cheese are 110 each, and an entrée portion of queso blanco is 120. Roasted chili-corn salsa is 80 calories, more than the other salsas, though it also adds 3 g fiber.

How to order healthier at Chipotle

  • Choose a bowl or salad over a burrito. Same fillings, 320 fewer calories and 600 mg less sodium.
  • Trade rice for a second protein. One scoop of rice is 210 calories; a second scoop of chicken is 180 calories with 32 g protein.
  • Load up on fajita veggies and lettuce. Fajita veggies are 20 calories a serving and Supergreens are 15, so they add volume for almost nothing.
  • Pick your salsa with sodium in mind. Green chili salsa has 260 mg, red chili salsa 500 mg and fresh tomato salsa 550 mg.
  • Choose one rich topping, not three. Guac, cheese, sour cream or queso: pick the one you’ll miss most.

How these picks were chosen

Every order is built from ingredients on Chipotle’s regular U.S. menu and comes in under 600 calories. Picks were chosen for protein per calorie, sodium, and how filling they are. Each total was added up from Chipotle’s published values for one standard serving of every ingredient, and double-checked. Real portions vary, and “light” or “extra” requests change the numbers, so treat these as close estimates.
