The Healthiest Starbucks Drinks and Food (With Calories and Protein)

The healthiest Starbucks drinks are simpler than the menu makes them look: black cold brew, an Americano, a latte with milk and no syrup, or one of the newer sugar-free protein lattes. On the food side, the egg white bites, the spinach and feta wrap and the turkey bacon sandwich all land under 300 calories with real protein. Below are the best picks with calories, sugar and protein for each, plus a few easy swaps.

All numbers are for a grande (16 oz) drink made the standard way, taken from Starbucks’ published nutrition information. Recipes and menus change, so check the Starbucks app for the version at your store.

The healthiest Starbucks drinks

1. Cold Brew or Nitro Cold Brew (black)

Grande: 5 calories, 0 g sugar.

Cold brew is smoother and less bitter than regular iced coffee, which makes it easier to drink without sugar. Nitro is the same idea with a creamy, foamy texture and no milk at all. If black is too much, a splash of milk adds roughly 10 to 35 calories, far less than a sweet cream topping.

2. Caffè Americano (hot or iced)

Grande: 15 calories, 0 g sugar.

Espresso topped with hot water (or poured over ice). It’s the closest thing to drip coffee on the espresso side of the menu, and the right pick when you want something hot and almost calorie-free.

3. Sugar-Free Vanilla Protein Latte (iced or hot)

Iced grande: 200 calories, 9 g sugar, 29 g protein. Hot grande: 230 calories, 15 g sugar, 27 g protein.

This is the standout for anyone tracking protein. Starbucks makes it with espresso, sugar-free vanilla syrup and its “protein-boosted milk,” which is 2% milk blended with whey protein. The sugar listed is the natural sugar in milk; there is no added sugar. Compare it with the regular Vanilla Protein Latte: same 27 g protein, but 310 calories and 34 g sugar because of the standard vanilla syrup.

4. Caffè Latte with nonfat milk

Grande, nonfat milk: about 130 calories, 13 g protein. With 2% milk: about 190 calories, 13 g protein.

A plain latte is just espresso and steamed milk, so all of its sugar comes from the milk itself. It’s a solid everyday order, with more protein than most people expect from a coffee. Want it a little sweet? One pump of sugar-free vanilla keeps the numbers almost the same.

5. Iced Shaken Espresso

Grande: 100 calories, 11 g sugar, 1 g protein.

Three shots of espresso shaken with classic syrup and finished with a splash of 2% milk. It’s strong, lightly sweet and frothy. Most of the sugar comes from the syrup, so asking for 2 pumps instead of the standard 4 cuts it roughly in half.

6. Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso

Grande: 120 calories, 13 g sugar, 1 g protein.

One of the most popular drinks on the menu, and lighter than its reputation. It’s dairy-free and tastes like a treat, but it barely has any protein, so pair it with one of the food picks below if it’s your breakfast.

7. Unsweetened iced tea

Grande, unsweetened: 0 calories, 0 g sugar.

Iced black, green and Passion Tango herbal tea come sweetened with classic syrup by default. Ask for them unsweetened and they drop to zero. Passion Tango is caffeine-free, which makes it a good afternoon pick.

8. Egg White & Roasted Red Pepper Egg Bites

Per order (2 bites): 170 calories, 12 g protein, 3 g sugar.

The lightest hot breakfast on the menu and one of the lowest in carbs. If you buy these often, our copycat Starbucks egg white bites make a dozen at home in a muffin tin.

9. Turkey Bacon, Cheddar & Egg White Sandwich

Per sandwich: 230 calories, 17 g protein, 5 g fat, 3 g fiber.

Egg whites, reduced-fat turkey bacon and reduced-fat white cheddar on a wheat English muffin. It’s the leanest breakfast sandwich Starbucks sells, at less than half the calories of the sausage or double-smoked bacon sandwiches.

10. Spinach, Feta & Egg White Wrap

Per wrap: 290 calories, 20 g protein, 8 g fat.

The best protein-for-calories ratio in the food case. The one thing to watch is sodium, which runs high, as it does in most packaged breakfast items.

11. Rolled & Steel-Cut Oatmeal

Plain: 160 calories, 5 g protein, 4 g fiber, 0 g sugar.

A whole-grain pick with no added sugar before toppings. The nut medley adds healthy fat and a little protein; brown sugar adds sugar fast, so use only part of the packet.

High-protein Starbucks combos

  • Iced Sugar-Free Vanilla Protein Latte + Egg White Bites: 370 calories, 41 g protein.
  • Spinach, Feta & Egg White Wrap + Americano: 305 calories, 21 g protein.
  • Turkey Bacon Sandwich + nonfat latte: about 360 calories, 30 g protein.

How to make any Starbucks drink healthier

  • Cut the pumps. A grande usually gets 4 pumps of syrup. Ask for 1 or 2, or switch to sugar-free vanilla.
  • Skip whipped cream and drizzle. They add calories and sugar without making the drink more filling.
  • Size down. A tall has about a quarter fewer calories than a grande of the same drink.
  • Add protein instead of sweet cream. Starbucks says its Protein Cold Foam adds about 15 g of protein to a grande cold drink.
  • Watch the blended drinks. A grande Caramel Frappuccino is about 420 calories with roughly 65 g of sugar, so treat it as dessert.

How these picks were chosen

Each item is on the regular U.S. menu and was picked for being low in calories and added sugar, or high in protein for its calories. Numbers come from Starbucks’ own nutrition pages and announcements where available, and from nutrition databases that publish Starbucks’ official figures for the rest.
