Drinks like Mountain Dew and Fresca may seem less chemical than cola and pepsi due to the lighter color, but that could be far farther from the reality. Instead, Mountain Dew and other sodas are colored using a harmful compound called brominated vegetable oil (BVO). BVO has been utilized as a food additive in the beverage business, chiefly to keep citrus-flavor oils wrapped from drinks and stop them from drifting to the peak of the fluid.

Observing an increasing amount of consumer complaints, both PepsiCo and Coca-Cola vowed to eliminate brominated vegetable oil (BVO) from soft drinks from 2013, but, Mountain Dew and Fresca soda nevertheless contains that ingredient.

BVO is a poisonous chemical that’s banned in several countries since it competes with iodine for receptor sites within the entire body, which may result in hypothyroidism, autoimmune disease, and even cancer.
