20. The Elderly
A low intake of vitamins and minerals, especially iron, calcium, and zinc, has been seen for the aged. Folic acid deficiency, combined with vitamin C deficiency, is sometimes identified. The use of fiber is always poor. Deficiencies have also been observed in riboflavin (B2) and pyridoxine (B6). A diminished sense of taste and scent, decreased digestive enzyme secretion, infectious illness, and, possibly, physical disability are potential causes.
